2010 Lineup > Buddy Miller
One of the most respected musicians and songwriters in the fringe-country community, Buddy Miller first appeared on the pop culture radar as part of Emmylou Harris’ Spyboy band, despite releasing excellent solo recordings (Your Love and Other Lies, Poison Love) prior to that. Over the years, his creative output has been intertwined with artists including Jim Lauderdale, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and Victoria Williams. Among Miller’s most significant creative partners is his wife, Julie, whose lyrics and earthy vocals color many of his albums.
Miller was raised in New Jersey, but he found his musical footing in the ’70s in Austin, where his career was indelibly shaped by the unprejudiced mingling of country, folk, rock and bluegrass. After stints in New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles, he and Julie settled in Nashville.
As a producer, Miller helmed albums by Jimmie Dale Gilmore (One Endless Night), Allison Moorer (Mockingbird) and Solomon Burke (Nashville). His songs have been covered by artists including the Dixie Chicks, Lee Ann Womack and Hank Williams III. He’s toured with Harris, Griffin, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings as the Sweet Harmony Traveling Revue, and with Griffin, Harris and Colvin as Three Girls and Their Buddy.
Miller’s star has risen in recent years: his Universal United House of Prayer was named Album of the Year in 2005 by the Americana Music Association; he was anointed Artist of the Decade by No Depression in the summer of 2008, and appeared on the cover of the magazine’s final print edition. In 2008/2009 he joined Alison Krauss and Robert Plant for their Raising Sand tour. Plant returned the favor by appearing on Written in Chalk, Miller’s second effort recorded and co-credited with his wife, which also features Regina and Ann McCrary, Harris and Griffin.
